The Hardy boys bid farewell to Chet Morton and Biff Hooper as they set off on a motorboat trip, but a violent storm hits and the friends never return. After days of worry, a ransom letter intended for Fenton Hardy reveals that the gang mistook Chet and Biff for Frank and Joe. Determined to rescue them, the brothers follow clues to Blacksnake Island, where they discover the criminals' cave hideout. They learn their father has also been captured. In a series of tense escapes and recaptures, Frank and Joe free Chet and Biff, then seize the gang's boats to maroon them. With help from friends and a U.S. revenue cutter, the criminals are captured. The Hardy family reunites safely, celebrating their triumph over the gang led by Red Hawkins and Baldy Turk.
