What happens
Mr. Markham, determined to secure Letty Grayson, devises a plan to abduct her to Scotland. He obtains a letter proving her father is a Jacobite and uses it to blackmail her into agreeing to marry him. At a ball, he lures her into a private room, shows her the letter, and threatens to expose her father unless she elopes with him. Letty, horrified and feeling trapped, reluctantly capitulates. Meanwhile, Lord Barham (Robin's father) secretly sets a servant to watch Markham's movements, suspecting foul play.
