Chapter 2
The Masqueraders
The chapter introduces the Tremaine family—Prudence, Robin, and their father—as they arrive at an inn under assumed identities. Prudence and Robin are disguised as Mr. and Miss Merriot, while their father poses as a gentleman of fashion. The narrative establishes their playful yet strategic masquerade, hinting at deeper motives involving family honor and social maneuvering.
Chapter 3
A Lady in Distress
The chapter opens with the Merriot siblings, Peter and Kate, arriving at an inn on a rainy night. They discover that a private room has been taken by a lady and gentleman traveling north. Meanwhile, Mr. Markham, who had been rendered unconscious, awakens to find his post-chaise gone with a lady inside. Suspecting Peter Merriot's involvement, he threatens him but is delayed. Later, Miss Letty Grayson, the lady in distress, is rescued from Mr. Markham's clutches by the Merriots. Peter knocks Markham down, and they arrange for the chaise to be driven away, hiding it to delay pursuit. The chapter ends with Miss Merriot feigning solicitude over the fallen Markham.
Chapter 4
Arrival of a Large Gentleman
Letty Grayson, having eloped with Gregory Markham, is rescued by the Merriots at an inn. She explains her flight was due to boredom, parental tyranny, and pressure to marry the older, staid Sir Anthony Fanshawe. Sir Anthony arrives, calmly disavows any intention of marrying her, and thanks the Merriots for their help.
Chapter 5
My Lady Lowestoft
Prudence and Robin arrive at Lady Lowestoft's London home, where they are warmly received by the eccentric Frenchwoman. Lady Lowestoft, an old acquaintance from their travels, recognizes them despite their disguises and offers shelter. The chapter reveals their past involvement in the Jacobite rebellion and their current precarious situation, with Robin under attainder. Prudence reflects on their journey and the mysterious absence of their father, Lord Barham.
