First appearance: iv the tale of a detective

As a supporting figure in The Man Who Was Thursday, Dr. Bull is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.

Bull is the optimist of the detective party, a man whose sympathy for Sunday persists even as he fights him like hell. He articulates the strange gaiety he senses in Sunday—a supreme strength shown in levity, like an elephant leaping into the sky. His instinctive affection for the enemy complicates the moral clarity of the undercover operation and hints at deeper conspiracies.
