Chapter 3
The Two Poets of Saffron Park
In the suburban garden of Saffron Park, the anarchist poet Lucian Gregory debates with the newly arrived poet Gabriel Syme, who defends order, law, and respectability. Gregory challenges Syme's dismissal of his seriousness as an anarchist, and after extracting a vow of secrecy, he invites Syme to a mysterious meeting, hinting at a deeper, more dangerous commitment to anarchy.
Chapter 4
The Secret of Gabriel Syme
Gabriel Syme learns that Lucian Gregory is a secret anarchist who disguises himself as a poet, and that the Central Anarchist Council members are named after days of the week. Gregory expects to be elected as Thursday. Syme reveals that he himself is a police detective, having taken a promise from Gregory not to betray his secret.
Chapter 5
The Man Who Was Thursday
Syme and Gregory find themselves in a tense standoff after Gregory discovers Syme is a police detective. They agree to a silent duel, each unable to betray the other. At the anarchist council meeting, Syme audaciously claims to be a Sabbatarian envoy from President Sunday, gaining entry. Gregory tries to downplay anarchist violence in his speech, but Syme delivers a fiery, uncompromising oration that wins over the council. Gregory attempts to expose Syme but falters, and Syme is elected as the new Thursday.
