Chapter 3
Prologue
Nadina, a Russian dancer in Paris, meets with Count Sergius Paulovitch. They discuss their mutual employer, 'the Colonel,' a mastermind of international crime who is retiring. Nadina reveals she has double-crossed him by keeping unique South American diamonds from the De Beer heist, intending to blackmail him. She also mentions her husband, who is arriving from South Africa to assist her.
Chapter 4

Anne Beddingfeld introduces herself and her longing for adventure, describing her life caring for her father, Professor Beddingfeld, a renowned but impractical scholar of primitive man. She recounts his excitement over a skull discovery in Northern Rhodesia and his sudden death from pneumonia after exploring a cave.
Chapter 5
II
After her father's death, Anne Beddingfeld learns she is left with only £87 and no relatives. She moves to London with the Flemming family, deliberately altering her appearance to seem more orphan-like to appease Mrs. Flemming. She rejects a marriage proposal from the local doctor, declaring her desire for adventure, and prepares to seek her fortune in the city.
