After her father's death, Anne Beddingfeld moves to London and soon witnesses a man fall onto the live rail at Hyde Park tube station. Convinced the death is connected to a murder at Mill House, she investigates, becoming a reporter for the Daily Budget. Her quest leads her to board the Kilmorden Castle to South Africa, where she encounters a cast of suspicious characters, including the enigmatic Sir Eustace Pedler and the handsome but secretive Harry Rayburn. Anne discovers a criminal organization led by 'the Colonel,' who is retiring after a diamond heist. She is kidnapped, escapes, and ultimately confronts Sir Eustace, who reveals himself as the mastermind. With the help of Colonel Race, Harry is cleared of suspicion and revealed to be the wealthy Sir Laurence Eardsley. Two years later, Anne and Harry live happily on an island, having reconciled after a crisis of trust, while Sir Eustace writes from exile in Bolivia.
