Philip has known only Helen's invented games and lessons, so when she whispers with a suitor at the garden gate, his jealousy curdles into a loneliness he can't name. He pours that ache into constructing a miniature city from blocks, books, and Noah's Ark animals—and the city answers back, pulling him into its streets. His wounded possessiveness and stubborn courage make him both the trespasser the city's astrologers foretold and the only boy who can save it.
