Dedication
E. Nesbit dedicates the book to Barbara, Maurice, and Stephen Chant, dated 1910 from Well Hall, Eltham, Kent.
Chapter 2
The Magic City
Philip Haldane, a young boy, finds himself in a new home after his mother's remarriage. Feeling lonely and out of place, he begins building an elaborate city out of books, toys, and household objects. One night, the city comes to life, and Philip is transported into a magical world where he must navigate adventures and challenges.
Chapter 3
I: The Beginning
Philip Haldane lives happily with his half-sister Helen in a little red-roofed house. Their idyllic life is disrupted when Helen meets a man, Peter Graham, and later announces her marriage to him. After the wedding, Helen goes on a honeymoon, leaving Philip in the care of a strict nurse at a large, lonely house called the Grange, which belongs to Helen's new stepdaughter Lucy. Philip is forbidden to play with Lucy's toys and feels miserable. When the nurse leaves suddenly, Philip is given permission to use the toys and begins building an elaborate city using bricks, books, and household objects, earning praise from the servants.
Chapter 4
Deliverer or Destroyer
Philip is captured by the city guards and brought before the captain, who questions him about his trespassing. Lucy arrives and Philip, angry at her presence, refuses to be friendly. They are taken to the Hall of Justice and imprisoned together. After a tense silence, Philip proposes a truce ('Pax') and they agree to cooperate. Lucy reveals that the city is actually the one Philip built on the tables in the drawing-room, now magically enlarged. The captain explains the prophecies about a trespasser who will bring mischief and a deliverer who will come the same way.
Chapter 5
Lost
Philip wakes up late at the Grange, feeling abandoned and guilty after learning that Lucy is missing. He overhears the nurse and cook discussing her disappearance and realizes that his magical city adventure was real. Mr. Noah comes to life and explains that the city exists in another world, prompting Philip's desperate desire to return and rescue Lucy.
