First appearance: The Collection of Antiquities

As a supporting figure in The Jealousies of a Country Town, Mlle. Armande is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.

Mlle. Armande is the pious, self-effacing woman who saved the family's lands during the Terror and has managed its dwindling household ever since. She loves Victurnien with a devotion that blinds her to his faults and makes her complicit in the family's ruinous pride. Her quiet sacrifices — and her refusal to see the truth about her nephew — embody the tragedy of a caste that would rather fall than change.
