First appearance: The Collection of Antiquities
As a major figure in The Jealousies of a Country Town, Victurnien d'Esgrignon is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
The young Comte, whose family's noble lineage is a point of pride and contention in the town.
Victurnien is the sole heir of an ancient name stripped of its fortune, raised by an aunt and a notary to believe the world owes him deference. His charm and recklessness collide with the d'Esgrignons' desperate pride, and his Parisian debts become the lever his family's enemies will use against them. He is the fault line along which the old aristocracy's survival will crack or hold.
