Chapter 1
The Haunted House
On a bright Saturday morning in June, Frank Hardy, Joe Hardy, Chet Morton, Jerry Gilroy, and Biff Hooper ride motorcycles along the shore road from Bayport. Seeking adventure, they decide to visit the reputedly haunted Polucca place, a stone house on a cliff where Felix Polucca was brutally murdered two years earlier. As a storm gathers, they enter the overgrown grounds and explore the dusty, deserted interior. Suddenly, a weird shriek rings out from upstairs, startling the group.
Chapter 2
The Storm
During a violent storm, the Hardy boys and their friends explore the Polucca house. They hear a terrifying shriek, and after a brief retreat, Frank and Joe decide to investigate further, while their friends hesitate. The storm intensifies, and the boys become trapped inside as the ceiling collapses.
Chapter 3
III: Empty Tool Boxes
After the ceiling collapse in the Polucca house, the boys escape through a boarded window and flee in the rain. They hear a mocking laugh from the house. Later, Frank and Joe discover their motorcycle tool boxes have been stolen, and Frank's motorcycle breaks down, forcing them to take shelter in a shed.
Chapter 4
The Chase in the Bay
After discovering their tool boxes stolen during their visit to the Polucca place, Frank and Joe Hardy debate returning to investigate but decide to continue home with their friends. While riding along the bay, they witness a dramatic motorboat chase, a rifle shot, and a violent explosion that throws a man into the water. The brothers prepare to attempt a rescue.
Chapter 5
The Rescue
The Hardy boys rescue a drowning man from the bay after an explosion, rowing him to a farmhouse where he regains consciousness and accuses Snackley of causing the wreck.
