Later, they rescue a man named Jones from a motorboat explosion, who accuses Snackley of causing the wreck. Their father, Fenton Hardy, becomes intrigued by the name Snackley, a known smuggler. When Fenton disappears, the boys receive a suspicious note and begin a desperate search. They discover a hidden cave and secret chamber beneath the cliff used by Snackley's gang to store contraband. In the chamber, they overhear Snackley threatening a prisoner—their father. The Hardys are captured but Fenton escapes using a magician's trick, freeing his sons. They flee into the haunted house, where a police raid ensues. Fenton subdues Snackley, and the boys help capture the remaining smugglers, including Li Chang. The mystery is explained: Snackley murdered Felix Polucca and used the house for smuggling. The boys are celebrated as heroes and receive a reward.

Frank Hardy
