Decay and the cent-shop

Hepzibah opens a shop to survive genteel poverty — the novel’s daily face of Pyncheon decline.

Once-proud Hepzibah Pyncheon must sell gingerbread and toys behind the dusty shop window, humiliation written in her scowl. Class and social decline theme makes economics visible: without Judge’s help, aristocratic name feeds no one. Ned Higgins and Uncle Venner supply village texture — ordinary appetite against Pyncheon pride.

The cent-shop chapters balance Gothic inheritance with comedy and pathos. Chanticleer’s crowing punctures doom. Use shop chapters when students ask if the book is only ghost story — it is also about women working when patriarchal wealth hides away in schemes like Judge’s.
