Concepts
Ideas that structure The Hoosier Schoolmaster by Edward Eggleston — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Education and Discipline
The book explores the challenges of teaching in a rough backwoods community, where physical strength and 'lickin' are often seen as necessary for learning, contrasting with the schoolmaster's more psychological and moral approach.
Social Class and Mobility
Characters like Ralph Hartsook and Squire Hawkins rise through education and marriage, while others like the Means family and bound girl Hannah are trapped by poverty and lack of opportunity, highlighting the rigid social hierarchies of rural Indiana.
Love and Marriage
Romantic relationships are central, with Ralph's courtship of Hannah overcoming class and suspicion, and Bud's awkward pursuit of Martha showing how love can transcend social awkwardness and family opposition.
Community and Gossip
The tight-knit but judgmental community of Flat Creek is driven by gossip, suspicion, and public events like spelling-schools and church meetings, which both unite and divide the residents.
Morality and Justice
The narrative contrasts genuine moral integrity (Ralph, Bud, Miss Nancy) with hypocrisy and corruption (Dr. Small, Pete Jones), and explores themes of theft, revenge, and the search for fairness in a lawless frontier setting.
Poverty and Charity
The book depicts the harsh realities of poverty, including the poorhouse and bound servitude, while also showing acts of charity and kindness that offer hope and redemption to the downtrodden.
Dialect and Cultural Identity
The heavy use of Hoosier dialect and folk speech emphasizes regional identity and the divide between educated outsiders and local backwoods culture, with the author's notes on language adding a scholarly layer.
Religion and Hypocrisy
Religious practices, from Hardshell Baptists to Methodist charity, are shown as both a source of genuine moral guidance and a mask for self-righteousness and judgment, as seen in characters like Mrs. White and the preacher.
Courage and Resilience
Ralph's persistence in the face of physical threats, Bud's moral awakening, and Hannah's endurance of abuse all illustrate the theme of personal courage and the ability to overcome adversity through determination.
