Chapter 1
The Shot
The chapter opens at the Château d'Ambrumésy after a burglary and murder. The examining magistrate, M. Filleul, arrives with officials to investigate the death of Jean Daval, the Comte de Gesvres' secretary. The scene is described, including the discovery of a chauffeur's cap and a dagger. The Comte de Gesvres recounts the attack, and his niece Raymonde de Saint-Véran describes shooting at a man in the park. A young student, Isidore Beautrelet, reveals himself as a disguised amateur detective and claims to know the identity of the murderer and the stolen objects, leading to a tense moment when Raymonde questions his presence near the château the previous day.
Chapter 2
II: Isidore Beautrelet, Sixth-Form Schoolboy
Isidore Beautrelet, a schoolboy detective, is celebrated by the press for his insights into the Lupin case. He plans to investigate during the Whitsuntide holidays, but on the journey to Dieppe he receives a threatening note. Upon arrival, he learns of the burglary at the Château d'Ambrumésy and the kidnapping of Mlle. de Saint-Véran. He examines a cryptic document found at the scene. Later, he is captured by Ganimard but released by M. Filleul, who then questions him about his deductions. Beautrelet argues that since a theft occurred but nothing was reported missing, the stolen items must have been replaced by exact duplicates.
Chapter 3
The Corpse
Isidore Beautrelet reveals that the chapel's statues and high altar are plaster casts, proving Lupin's gang stole the originals. He deduces the existence of a hidden crypt beneath the chapel where Lupin's body lies. After breaking through the altar, they discover the crypt and descend to find the corpse.
Chapter 4
IV: Face to Face
Five weeks after the Ambrumésy mystery, the public is obsessed with the case, believing Arsène Lupin dead. Isidore Beautrelet, recovering from his wound, has deduced the truth: Lupin is alive, having been nursed by Mlle. de Saint-Véran, whom he later abducted. In a tense confrontation, Beautrelet reveals his plan to publish an article exposing Lupin's survival and the staged death. Lupin threatens to kidnap Beautrelet's father, but Beautrelet counters that his father is safely hidden. The chapter ends with a stalemate between the two rivals.
Chapter 5
On the Track
Isidore Beautrelet learns of his father's mysterious disappearance from the naval arsenal at Cherbourg, despite tight security. He receives Lupin's letter confessing his love for Mlle. de Saint-Véran and seeking peace. Beautrelet investigates, following Gaffer Charel, a witness who may have seen the prisoner, but finds the old man's memory has been tampered with. He then shadows a man watching Charel, hoping to find the hidden castle where his father is held.
