Chapter 1
Epigraph

Chapter 4
The Twenty-Ninth of October 1902
The narrator, sitting in the 'George' at Robertsbridge, is overcome by a vision of his home in Sussex and decides to walk there. He meets an older man, whom he names Grizzlebeard, and they agree to journey together through the county, gathering company along the way. They set out at dawn on the 30th of October 1902.
Chapter 5
The Thirtieth of October 1902
The narrator and Grizzlebeard walk to Brightling, where they meet a Sailor at an inn. Over breakfast, the narrator tells the story of Squire Fuller of Brightling, a larger-than-life figure who defied Parliament and returned to Sussex. The three then set out together and encounter a poet on the road.
