Cornleigh reigns but Letitia governs — a marriage arranged precisely because his family knew he needed a strong will to guide him. Together they preside over Maasbury's improvements and a severe moral law: if a cottage girl disgraces herself, every inhabitant, from infant to grandparent, is turned off the estate. This retrospective punishment, attributed to Letitia though never quite traced to her alone, hangs over the hamlet as a threat that makes Mary Shaw's secret love affair a matter of survival, not merely scandal.
