Concepts
Ideas that structure The Demi-Gods by James Stephens — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Freedom and Outlawry
The book explores the life of Patsy Mac Cann, a tramp who lives outside societal laws and norms, hunting for food with wolf-like skill, and contrasts his horizontal freedom with the constrained lives of settled housefolk.
Power and Gender
Mary Mac Cann's desire for power and her role as a mother-figure to the men is examined, alongside a deep analysis of female beauty, women's worship of beauty, and the battle for dominance between the sexes.
The Divine and the Mundane
Angels named Finaun, Caeltia, and Art descend to earth and travel with the tramps, blending celestial wisdom with the gritty, everyday struggles of survival, storytelling, and petty theft.
Storytelling and Wisdom
The narrative is rich with embedded tales, such as the saga of Brien O'Brien and the myth of the demon lovers, highlighting storytelling as a means of conveying deep truths about karma, memory, and human nature.
Love and Conflict
A central myth describes two beings, Finaun and Caeltia, who pursue each other through lifetimes with a hate slowly changing into love, illustrating the intimate and destructive nature of eternal enmity.
Nature and Survival
The characters live intimately with the natural world—camping in quarries, sleeping in haystacks, and enduring rain—while the donkey and the elements are portrayed as sentient participants in their journey.
Social Marginalization
The book contrasts the vagabonds (tinkers, ballad singers, tramps) with settled housefolk, who are viewed with suspicion and fear, emphasizing the divide between those who roam and those who are 'rooted' in houses.
