The Conquest of Bread · Concepts
Concepts
Ideas that structure The Conquest of Bread by Peter Kropotkin — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Economic Inequality
The book argues that modern society is rich in productive capacity, yet the majority are poor because the means of production have been seized by a few, who exploit the labor of the many for their own profit.
Right to Life and Well-Being
A central theme is that every person has an absolute right to live, and society must guarantee bread, shelter, and clothing for all, prioritizing the satisfaction of basic needs over political rhetoric.
Critique of Capitalism and Wage Labor
The text condemns the wage system as a form of exploitation, where capitalists profit by paying workers less than the value of what they produce, and argues that this system perpetuates poverty and insecurity.
Anarchist Communism
The book advocates for a stateless, decentralized society based on common ownership of land and tools, free agreement, and voluntary cooperation, rejecting both state socialism and private property.
Revolution and Expropriation
Kropotkin argues that a social revolution must involve the immediate expropriation of all resources—food, housing, and means of production—by the people, rather than relying on gradual legislation or political reforms.
Integration of Agriculture and Industry
The book proposes combining agricultural and industrial work to eliminate the division between town and country, allowing for varied, fulfilling labor and ensuring local food self-sufficiency.
Individuality and Leisure
Beyond material needs, the revolution aims to provide leisure and freedom for intellectual, artistic, and scientific pursuits, respecting diverse individual tastes and rejecting uniformity.
Historical Lessons of Revolutions
The text analyzes past revolutions (e.g., 1789, 1848, 1871) to show that they failed because they neglected to secure bread for the people, allowing reaction to triumph over popular movements.
