Concepts
Ideas that structure The Canary Murder Case by S. S. Van Dine — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.

Margaret Odell, a Broadway 'Canary' from the bohemian demimonde, is contrasted with the wealthy, respectable men in her life, revealing the hypocrisy and hidden moral decay beneath the surface of high society and the dangers of crossing class boundaries.
Deception and Manipulation
Nearly every character constructs alibis, lies, or hides their true activities on the night of the murder, demonstrating how fear, blackmail, and self-preservation drive people to deceive both the police and each other.
Fate and Desperation
The murderer is described as a fatalist driven by 'desperate and tragic despair,' and the crime is portrayed as the result of a man backed into a corner, willing to kill to avoid ruin, echoing themes of passional melodrama and the tragic consequences of one's own actions.
