Chapter 1
Racing the Storm
Nancy Drew and Helen Corning are caught in a sudden, violent storm while out on Moon Lake in a motorboat. Despite their efforts to race back to camp, the boat strikes a log and begins to sink. The girls struggle to bail water and call for help, but the boat capsizes, leaving them in grave danger.
Chapter 2
A Desperate Struggle
Nancy Drew and Helen Corning are caught in a violent storm on Moon Lake after their motorboat sinks. Nancy, an excellent swimmer, struggles to keep Helen afloat as Helen panics and clings to her. Despite exhaustion and the hopelessness of the situation, Nancy refuses to abandon her friend. A girl in a rowboat rescues them, and Nancy takes over the oars to guide the boat to safety.
Chapter 3
A New Friend
Nancy and Helen are rescued from a storm on Moon Lake by a mysterious girl named Laura Pendleton. After reaching safety in a boathouse, Laura reveals she is an orphan awaiting the arrival of her guardian, Jacob Aborn, whom she fears. Nancy and Helen befriend her and invite her to visit their camp.
Chapter 4
A Visitor
Laura Pendleton visits Nancy and Helen at camp, where they try to make her feel welcome. Laura reveals she is worried about meeting her guardian, Jacob Aborn, the next day. Nancy and Helen agree to visit her at her hotel.
Chapter 5
Laura's Guardian
Nancy and Helen visit Laura at the Lakeside Hotel, where they meet her guardian Jacob Aborn. Aborn is controlling and unpleasant, insisting on leaving immediately for Melrose Lake despite Laura's protests. The girls sense Laura's fear and Aborn's hostility, and after overhearing him berating Laura, they become determined to help her.
