Snegiryov scrapes by in poverty, mocked by neighbors and ground down by debts he cannot pay, yet he clings fiercely to a dignity no one else grants him. When Dmitri Karamazov drags him from a tavern by his beard, the humiliation lands hardest not on the captain but on Ilusha, who watches and burns. That boy's agony pulls the Karamazov brothers into a world of suffering far from their own, and turns a minor town figure into the moral hinge of the novel's middle stretch.
