Concepts
Ideas that structure The Borough Treasurer by J. S. Fletcher — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Crime and Punishment
The narrative revolves around past crimes (embezzlement by Mallalieu and Cotherstone) and present crimes (blackmail, murder), exploring how characters are haunted by their misdeeds and the legal and moral consequences that follow.
Secrecy and Blackmail
The central conflict is driven by the exposure of a long-hidden secret from the protagonists' past, leading to blackmail by Kitely and later by Stoner, highlighting the destructive power of hidden truths.
Respectability and Hypocrisy
Mallalieu and Cotherstone are outwardly prosperous, respected civic leaders (Mayor, Borough Treasurer), yet they are criminals living a lie, demonstrating the gap between public reputation and private corruption.
Greed and Materialism
Characters are motivated by money and wealth: the partners' original crime was for financial gain, Kitely and Stoner seek to profit through blackmail, and the reward offered for information underscores the power of money to drive action.
Justice and Innocence
The wrongful accusation of Harborough for Kitely's murder raises questions about legal justice versus actual innocence, with the barrister Brereton working to prove Harborough's innocence against circumstantial evidence.
Family and Loyalty
Cotherstone's primary fear is the impact of exposure on his daughter Lettie's happiness and marriage prospects, while Avice Harborough's devotion to her father and Brereton's eventual romantic attachment to her highlight familial and romantic bonds.
Deception and Betrayal
The plot is built on layers of deception: the partners deceive the town for decades, Cotherstone betrays Mallalieu by testifying against him, and characters like Stoner and the Petts scheme for personal gain.
Fate and Consequence
The past inevitably catches up with the characters; Kitely's chance arrival in Highmarket triggers a chain of events leading to murder, flight, and ruin, illustrating that past crimes have inescapable consequences.
