Concepts
Ideas that structure The Adventures of Sally by P. G. Wodehouse — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Wealth and Class
The book explores how sudden wealth and social class affect characters' behavior and relationships, from Sally's legacy to Fillmore's pompousness and the boardinghouse patrons' attitudes.
Love and Self-Discovery
Sally's journey involves recognizing her true feelings for Ginger while navigating engagements to Gerald and Bruce, ultimately discovering what she truly values in a partner.
Family Obligation and Conflict
Sally's relationship with her brother Fillmore is central, showing the tension between familial duty and personal integrity, especially when his schemes threaten her finances and happiness.
Generosity and Sacrifice
Sally repeatedly gives her money and time to help others—lending to Fillmore, supporting Gerald's play, and giving Ginger his start—often at her own expense.
Ambition and Enterprise
Characters like Fillmore, Gerald, and Ginger pursue business and artistic ventures, with the narrative examining the risks, rewards, and moral compromises of striving for success.
Social Mobility and Bohemianism
The story contrasts the world of boardinghouses, theaters, and dance halls with the rigid expectations of upper-class English society, as seen through Bruce Carmyle and the Family.
Identity and Pretense
Characters hide engagements, adopt false personas, or struggle with who they are—Sally's secret engagement, Ginger's awkwardness, and Fillmore's inflated self-image all highlight this theme.
Loyalty and Friendship
Sally's steadfast loyalty to her friends—like Elsa and Ginger—and their reciprocal support underscore the importance of chosen family over blood ties.
