  1. Chapter 1

    I: Sally Gives a Party

    Sally Nicholas hosts a dinner party at Mrs. Meecher's boardinghouse, where her brother Fillmore's new wealth and pompous demeanor create an awkward atmosphere. The guests discuss how Sally should spend her legacy, and Sally reveals she has only twenty-five thousand dollars. Gerald Foster announces that his play will be produced by Reginald Cracknell, but Sally is dismayed to learn that Mabel Hobson will play the lead, feeling it compromises the play's integrity. The chapter ends with Mr. Faucitt giving a speech toasting Sally.

  2. Chapter 2

    I

    Sally Nicholas, after a disturbing night, encounters Gerald Foster, who is drunk and miserable about his failing playwriting career. Despite her usual sympathy, Sally feels detached and resentful, realizing she has outgrown her former infatuation with him. She coldly sends him to bed, marking a shift in her emotional independence.

  3. Chapter 3

    II

    Sally Nicholas discovers Gerald Foster has trashed Elsa Doland's apartment in a drunken rage. She cleans up the mess while Gerald, in a state of drunken self-pity, tries to justify his actions. Sally's initial amusement turns to weary disgust, and she eventually falls asleep from exhaustion.

  4. Chapter 4

    III

    Sally wakes after a restless night, feeling a mix of relief and detachment from Gerald Foster, who is also present. Bruce Carmyle arrives for a planned drive, but upon seeing Gerald, he misinterprets the situation and leaves in anger. Sally then calls Ginger Kemp, who is overjoyed to hear from her.

  5. Chapter 5

    II: Enter Ginger

    Sally Nicholas, on holiday in Roville-sur-Mer, is about to return to America. On the beach, she meets Ginger Kemp, a young Englishman with a charming but hapless history. Ginger explains his failed career attempts and his current job as a secretary to the pompous Mr. Scrymgeour, a position he got through his cousin, Bruce Carmyle. Sally is intrigued by Ginger and later sees him at her hotel, where he has moved after losing money at the Casino.
