After a polar bear attack destroys much of their supplies, the sledge party debates whether to return to the ship or press on. They decide to continue, enduring extreme cold, frostbite, and the worsening health of Simpson, who develops severe scurvy. On January 23rd, Duke discovers a cairn containing a damp paper from the Porpoise, dated December 13, 1860, indicating other travelers have been in the area. Hatteras insists on pushing forward despite the discovery.
