Chapter 1
Part I: The English at the North Pole

Chapter 3
An Unexpected Letter
Richard Shandon receives a mysterious letter from an unknown captain, K. Z., offering him the position of mate on a brig called the Forward. The letter includes detailed instructions for building the ship, selecting a crew of eighteen men, and preparing for a long and perilous voyage. Shandon is promised a high salary and a share of the renown the voyage will bring. The letter also mentions a Danish dog to be received later and that the captain will reveal himself in due time.
Chapter 4
Dr. Clawbonny
Richard Shandon, a seasoned sailor, accepts the mysterious offer from K. Z. to command the Forward. He begins assembling a crew and overseeing the ship's construction in Birkenhead. Dr. Clawbonny, a cheerful and learned man, arrives after receiving his own letter from K. Z., eager to join the expedition despite knowing nothing of its destination.
Chapter 5
The Dog-Captain
On April 5th, the day of departure, the crew of the Forward prepares to sail amid unease and superstition. Dr. Clawbonny's presence reassures some, but the mysterious captain's cabin remains locked, and the crew's anxiety grows. The ship's dog, called 'Captain,' behaves oddly, walking windward and avoiding contact, fueling superstitious fears. Shandon, the doctor, Wall, and Johnson discuss the lack of orders; Johnson advises sailing regardless. At noon, with no letter, Shandon orders departure, but the dog appears with a letter in its mouth, instructing Shandon to sail toward Cape Farewell and through Davis Strait to Melville Sound, signed 'K. Z., Captain of the Forward.'
