Ruth Oliver arrives in the story as a nameless patient in a strange house, too ill to be questioned and too frightened to be undressed. She clutches her shoes because they hide her small fortune, recoils at any hand near her feet, and murmurs the Van Burnam names in her sleep. Her terror, her refined accent, and the rings she refuses to claim mark her as the mystery's living hinge — a woman whose history, once told, reframes everything the investigation thought it knew.
