Howard Van Burnam is a young man of respectable family whose testimony keeps contradicting itself at exactly the wrong moments. He admits returning to his father's house in the small hours, claims he never went in, and cannot explain why he failed to ring the bell for the wife he says was alive inside. His restlessness, his evasions, and the regretful glances his friend Stone casts his way make him the investigation's most obvious suspect — and the most uncomfortably human one.
