Concepts
Ideas that structure Sylvie and Bruno by Lewis Carroll — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Love and Selflessness
The book contrasts selfish love with selfless love, most clearly in the Magic Locket episode where Sylvie chooses the red locket ('Sylvie will love all') over the blue one ('All will love Sylvie'), emphasizing that loving others is more important than being loved.
Innocence and Childhood Wisdom
Sylvie and Bruno embody a pure, uncorrupted perspective that often reveals deeper truths, as seen in their playful logic, their kindness to others (like the fly and the frogs), and their intuitive understanding of moral lessons that adults miss.
Social Critique and Class
Carroll satirizes social hierarchies, political absurdity, and economic inequality through scenes like the Sub-Warden's revolution of 'More bread—Less taxes,' the exploitation of the poor, and the critique of temperance and drinking habits among working men.
Reality vs. Fantasy
The narrative constantly blurs the line between the real world (Elveston) and Fairyland, using dream sequences, magical objects like the Magic Watch, and the children's ability to shift between realms to explore the permeability of imagination and reality.
Education and Learning
The book humorously critiques rigid, rule-based education through Bruno's lessons—his resistance to arithmetic, his creative geography ('Kingfisher Lesson'), and the absurd 'Medicine-Day' system—suggesting that true learning should be playful and meaningful.
Morality and Ethics
Moral questions permeate the story, from the nature of promises and truthfulness (discussed with Lady Muriel) to the consequences of selfishness, greed, and dishonesty, as seen in the fable of Peter and Paul and the corrupt behavior of the Vice-Warden's family.
Family and Parental Relationships
The contrast between the loving, nurturing father (the King of Elfland) and the dysfunctional, abusive family of the Vice-Warden (with Uggug's spoiled behavior and violent punishments) highlights the importance of gentle, affectionate parenting.
Art and Authenticity
Through the critique of the 'brilliant' but soulless pianist and the children's genuine, heartfelt performances (like Bessie's lullaby), Carroll contrasts mechanical perfection with authentic emotional expression in art.
