Introduced as the local barber and a central character.
Jeff shaves the commercial travellers and the bank manager in his little shop across from Smith's Hotel, a fixture of Mariposa's morning routine. When the Cobalt and Porcupine mining boom arrives, he becomes the town's unlikely financier, and everyone suddenly discovers his levelheadedness. His rise and fall trace the town's appetite for speculation and its readiness to crown and discard its heroes.
