The Marine Excursions of the Knights of Pythias
The chapter describes the annual excursion of the Mariposa Knights of Pythias aboard the steamer Mariposa Belle. It opens with the festive morning departure, full of community spirit and humor, then shifts to the return journey where the boat begins to sink. Panic spreads, but the boat settles on a reed bank. IV: The Ministrations of the Rev. Mr. Drone
The chapter introduces the Church of England in Mariposa and its rector, Rural Dean Drone, who spends his leisure reading Theocritus in Greek beneath plum trees. Despite his scholarly pursuits, the rector is burdened by a growing church debt and a series of failed fundraising efforts—including an endless chain letter, a bazaar, a magic lantern lecture, and a humor reading. The chapter also recounts how Mr. Pupkin met Zena Pepperleigh during one of these efforts. Finally, Henry Mullins returns from a trip with the idea of a Whirlwind Campaign to clear the debt.
