Book Summary
After a Throg attack leaves him stranded on the alien world Warlock, low-status Survey worker Shann Lantee must survive alongside his wolverines and a fellow survivor. Together, they navigate hostile landscapes, encounter mysterious Wyverns, and confront both external enemies and their own inner demons.
Shann Lantee, a low-ranking Survey worker, survives a Throg attack on his camp and hides in the wilderness with his genetically enhanced wolverines, Taggi and Togi. He is later rescued by Ragnar Thorvald, a higher-status officer, and the two form an uneasy alliance. They raid the Throg-occupied camp, flee across a desert, and follow shared dreams of a skull-shaped mountain and a green veil. After Thorvald abandons him on an island, Shann captures a Warlockian native woman and discovers a telepathic Wyvern society. The Wyverns, who communicate through dreams and mental impressions, enlist Shann to confront a trapped Throg officer. Captured by the Throgs, Shann is forced to broadcast a false message to a Terran cruiser. As the Throgs prepare to execute him, a mysterious luminous mist—a weapon of the Wyverns—rises and drives the Throgs into panic, saving Shann and suggesting a new alliance between Terrans and Wyverns.

Shann Lantee
Shann Lantee is the least important man on the Survey team, a Dumps-of-Tyr orphan who cleaned animal cages just to wear the uniform. When Garth Thorvald's cruelty accidentally saves his life, Shann finds himself alone on an enemy-held world with only two wolverines and no supplies. His fierce, unpolished resourcefulness and his bond with the animals become the unlikely foundation of resistance.
Ragnar Thorvald
Ragnar Thorvald is the tall, cool-eyed officer Shann worshiped from afar, the one man who argued against opening Warlock before the Throgs struck. Stranded alongside Shann, he brings field discipline and hard-won experience, but his confidence is shaken by a world that defies Survey doctrine. His uneasy alliance with Shann—and his shadowed connection to his brother Garth—drives the pair deeper into Warlock's mysteries.
Throgs
The Throgs are the unseen terror behind Warlock's fall, a starfaring race that has fought Terrans across many worlds but never once communicated with them. Their technology and hounds make them lethal, yet their inability to share minds with other species is both their strength and their vulnerability. One stranded Throg, cut off from his kind and stripped of his weapon, becomes the strange fulcrum on which Shann's fate turns.
Taggi
Taggi is a miniature bear-devil from Terra's northlands, one of the first wolverines ever tested on Warlock, and now one of only two of his kind left alive there. Excitable and demanding of Shann's attention, he and his companion Togi range ahead, catch skitterers, and dig out earth-wasp burrows with tireless curiosity. His keen senses and fierce loyalty make him far more than a pet—he is Shann's scout, guard, and last link to home.
Togi
Togi is one of the two mutated wolverines who survive the Throg attack alongside Shann, a warm-furred fugitive and the only other representative of her species on Warlock. Where Taggi rushes ahead, Togi moves with a steadier caution, squeezing into crevices and sharing the night's watch with her companion. Her presence, pressed against Shann in the dark, is both practical protection and a quiet anchor of companionship in a world that wants him dead.
Garth Thorvald
Garth Thorvald is a smudged copy of his impressive brother—arrogant, well-muscled, and intent on reminding a labor hand of the gulf between them. His malicious prank of opening the wolverines' cage sends Shann into the hills, which is why Shann is alive when the domes burn. Though he never appears again, his shadow hangs over Shann's memories and over Ragnar's name, a reminder of the casual cruelty that shaped Shann's world.
