Concepts
Ideas that structure Sticks and Stones by Lewis Mumford — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Architecture as a Reflection of Civilization
The book argues that architecture is not merely a technical or aesthetic pursuit but a direct expression of a society's values, institutions, and stage of civilization, with good building emerging from a healthy, integrated community life.
Community vs. Individualism
The text contrasts the cohesive, cooperative medieval village community—where shared purpose and common land fostered organic architecture—with the exploitative, individualistic pioneer and commercial spirit that led to chaotic, speculative building.
Craftsmanship vs. Mechanization
The book explores the tension between handicraft, which imbues work with the worker's soul and serves local needs, and machine production, which prioritizes speed, standardization, and profit, often at the cost of quality and human meaning.
The Myth of Progress and the Pioneer
The author critiques the pioneer myth of starting anew, showing that early settlements actually preserved medieval European traditions, while later 'progress'—driven by exploitation and speculation—led to cultural and architectural decline.
Economic and Social Foundations of Art
The book emphasizes that fine architecture cannot be achieved through taste or education alone; it requires just economic conditions, such as fair land distribution and cooperative labor, as seen in the New England village or the garden city movement.
The Classical Myth and Imperial Power
The adoption of classical architecture in America is linked to the rise of a landholding elite and merchant class, serving as a stage for republican heroes and later for the conspicuous wealth of industrial barons, masking social inequalities.
Nature, Place, and Exploitation
The text criticizes the American tendency to treat the land as a resource to be exploited and cleared for profit, rather than as a permanent home, leading to environmental degradation and a loss of rootedness in place.
Human Scale and Organic Urban Planning
The book advocates for limited, human-scaled communities—like the Puritan village or the garden city—where planning serves social and civic life, in contrast to the chaotic, congested growth of the modern metropolis driven by land speculation.
