Chapter 1

Ras Hume meets with the criminal mastermind Milfors Wass to propose a scheme: using a conditioned impostor to claim the Kogan estate by faking survival from the Largo Drift crash on Jumala. Hume selects a boy with no ties, and Wass agrees to supply Jumala memory tapes and arrange a safari to 'discover' the claimant.

Vye Lansor, a state child and swamper at the Starfall, is recruited by Out-Hunter Ras Hume, who drugs him and delivers him to Milfors Wass's organization to be transformed into Rynch Brodie, heir to a fortune. The chapter contrasts the squalor of the Starfall with Hume's calculated manipulation.
Chapter 3

Rynch Brodie awakens with a headache and fragmented memories, struggling to reconcile his identity as a castaway on Jumala with strange, intrusive visions of a room, a man, and a cup. He hunts and survives in the wilderness, but his sense of self is increasingly undermined by alien influences. Meanwhile, Ras Hume lands with a group of clients, including Gentlehomo Starns, and a gearman sent by Milfors Wass, to orchestrate a scheme involving the abandoned L-B and the castaway, whom Hume has planted with subconscious commands.
Chapter 4

The safari camp is established on Jumala, and Hume leads the clients in setting up. Around the fire, Starns questions Hume about the verifier and the assurance of no intelligent native life. Hume, Rovald, and the clients discuss hunting plans, with undercurrents of tension about a hidden agenda involving Brodie. Starns spots a flash of light in the woods, which Hume dismisses as a bird or reflection, but it raises suspicion. That night, an alien force probes the camp's barrier but is repelled, and it begins marshaling creatures for a new assault at dawn.
Chapter 5
V
Rynch Brodie, having fled from the landing party, hides in the trees and observes the alien creatures that surround the survivor's camp. He attempts to find a detour to rejoin the humans, but encounters a water-cat attack and a strong-jaws trap. He ultimately captures the stranger from the spacer camp, taking his needler and demanding they talk.
