Book Summary
A destitute boy is transformed into a false heir through memory conditioning and stranded on a dangerous alien world as part of a criminal scheme. As he struggles to reclaim his identity, he uncovers a deeper conspiracy involving a Patrol sting operation and mysterious alien forces.
Vye Lansor, a state child working as a swamper in the squalid Starfall, is recruited by Out-Hunter Ras Hume, drugged, and delivered to criminal mastermind Milfors Wass. Wass's organization implants false memories to turn Vye into Rynch Brodie, the heir to the Kogan estate, and strands him on the alien planet Jumala to fake survival from a crash. As Rynch, he hunts and survives in the wilderness, but his implanted identity fractures under alien influences and his own buried memories. Hume and a safari party arrive to 'discover' him, but Rynch confronts Hume, refusing to play along. After saving Hume from scavengers, they are surrounded by alien blue beasts and glowing lights, forcing a tense alliance. They escape to a valley trapped by an invisible barrier, where they discover an artificial underwater structure and a distress call from Wass's camp. Hume and Vye rescue the camp, but Vye is later questioned by the Patrol. Hume reveals the entire scheme was a Patrol sting to capture Wass, with Hume as bait. Vye is offered victim compensation and a chance to reclaim his true identity.

Follow the arc while readingRas Hume
Hume runs the safari camp with quiet authority, answering Starns' pedantic questions about verifiers and intelligent life while privately calculating what each client has actually seen. He carries a debt to someone unnamed, a reason for hiring a Starfall swamper as his gearman, and a cynical distrust that sharpens whenever events fit together too smoothly. His double role as guide and schemer makes him the hinge on which the hunt's early arc turns.
Vye Lansor
Vye Lansor is a state child, S.C.C. 425061, raised after the Five-Hour Fever epidemic with no parents and no prospects beyond the port-side dives. When a Guild Hunter offers him a gearman's berth, he reads the man's Fata Rite talk of balancing scales as the only explanation for a fortune he cannot believe he deserves. His hunger for legitimacy and his instinct to question it drive the story's view from below.
Rynch Brodie
Rynch Brodie survives alone on a world of water-cats and blue-black shelled swarms, his bare arms and scanty gear each earned by labor or battle he can almost remember. Yet the shadow of a room and a cup keeps overlaying the stream and rocks, and the ache in his skull punishes every attempt to hold it. His fractured certainty about who he is seeds the mystery the hunters are walking toward.
Milfors Wass
Milfors Wass travels with the hunting party as a man of consequence, his authority and his man watching the woods with an attention Hume finds worth noting. By the time the Patrol collects him he is a witless, dazed creature still under the mental influence of whoever set the trap, and his ruined state becomes the measure of what the expedition stumbled into. His fate shadows the survivors' reckonings with the Patrol.
Gentlehomo Starns
A minor noble or official encountered during the story.
Rovald
A character with limited but notable appearances in the narrative.
Identity and Memory
The protagonist Vye Lansor/Rynch Brodie struggles with implanted false memories and a fractured sense of self, questioning who he truly is as his past is manipulated by powerful forces.
Power and Corruption
The criminal empire of Wass and the ruthless schemes of the Out-Hunter Hume illustrate how wealth and influence corrupt individuals, enabling exploitation and illegal conditioning for personal gain.
Survival and Resilience
Characters repeatedly face deadly environments, alien threats, and human treachery, relying on their wits, physical endurance, and adaptability to survive on the hostile planet Jumala.
Class and Exploitation
The stark contrast between the opulent pleasure houses of the upper town and the brutal port-drift existence of laborers like Vye highlights systemic inequality and the exploitation of the poor by the powerful.
