Concepts
Ideas that structure Something New by P. G. Wodehouse — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Social Class and Servitude
The book explores the rigid hierarchies of English society, especially below stairs, where servants follow complex rules of precedence and etiquette, and characters like Ashe and Joan must navigate their roles as valet and lady's maid.
Adventure and Enterprise
The narrative champions a spirit of reckless adventure and curiosity, contrasting Ashe's initial laziness with his eventual embrace of a dangerous, delicate enterprise to recover a stolen scarab for a reward.
Romance and Rivalry
Romantic entanglements are intertwined with competitive schemes, as seen in the love triangle between Aline, Freddie, and George, and the rivalry between Ashe and Joan for the scarab reward.
Wealth and Its Discontents
The pursuit and possession of money drive the plot, with characters like Mr. Peters suffering from dyspepsia and family strife despite his wealth, and Freddie trapped by financial dependence on his father.
Appearance vs. Reality
Characters frequently adopt disguises and false personas—Ashe as a valet, Joan as a lady's maid—highlighting the gap between their true identities and the roles they play in the household.
Family and Obligation
Family dynamics are central, from Lord Emsworth's absent-minded parenting and frustration with his son Freddie, to the strained relationships among the extended family at Blandings Castle.
Health and Self-Improvement
Physical fitness and dietary reform are recurring motifs, with Ashe's Larsen Exercises and Mr. Peters' struggle with indigestion symbolizing the pursuit of personal transformation and discipline.
Comedy of Manners and Mistaken Identity
The book employs farcical misunderstandings, such as the mix-up over who stole the scarab and the chaotic nighttime encounters, to satirize the foibles of the upper class and their servants.
