Chapter 1
I
Ashe Marson, a struggling writer of detective stories for the British Pluck Library, is interrupted while trying to write 'The Adventure of the Wand of Death' by his neighbor Joan Valentine, who apologizes for laughing at his morning exercises. Their conversation evolves into a discussion of their respective careers and frustrations, with Joan encouraging Ashe to seek adventure and opportunity. Inspired by her, Ashe resolves to read the advertisement pages of the Morning Post.

Freddie Threepwood, recently engaged to Aline Peters, confides in his friend R. Jones about a past romantic entanglement with a chorus girl named Joan Valentine, to whom he wrote letters and poetry that could jeopardize his engagement. Meanwhile, Lord Emsworth reflects on the engagement with relief, and Freddie invites a new acquaintance, George Emerson, to Blandings Castle. The chapter also introduces R. Jones as a jovial but shrewd moneylender and curio dealer.

Aline Peters and Joan Valentine discuss Joan's plan to pose as Aline's lady's maid to steal the scarab from Blandings Castle. Joan convinces a reluctant Aline, revealing she has worked as a lady's maid before. Later, George Emerson presses his suit with Aline, who gently rejects him, mentioning her engagement to Freddie Threepwood and praising Joan Valentine. Mr. Peters discovers Lord Emsworth has taken the Cheops scarab and rages, blaming the absent-minded earl. At the Senior Conservative Club, Lord Emsworth chats with steward Adams about Mr. Peters, the engagement, and his own painting of furniture.
Chapter 4

Ashe Marson accepts a dangerous and delicate job from Mr. J. Preston Peters to recover a stolen scarab, for a reward of one thousand pounds. He then informs Joan Valentine of his new position as a valet, only to discover that she has been hired as a lady's maid to Mr. Peters' daughter, Aline. Suspicious of the coincidence, Joan investigates and finds the advertisement that led Ashe to the job, resolving to claim the reward for herself.
Chapter 5
V
Ashe and Joan arrive at Blandings Castle and are greeted by the staff. Ashe meets Beach, the butler, and later joins the servants' hall for dinner, where a conversation reveals that Freddie Threepwood once wrote passionate letters and poems to a girl named Joan Valentine. Joan is visibly disturbed by this revelation, but Ashe quickly covers for her. The chapter also includes a detailed explanation of the servants' hierarchy and a growing tension between Ashe and Joan.
