First appearance: ii smoky meets the human
As a supporting figure in Smoky the Cowhorse, Old Tom is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
The old buckskin horse, pensioned and scarred, who becomes Smoky's playful guardian and protector among the herd.
Old Tom belongs to the working texture of the Rocking R, one of the riders whose days are measured in circles, remudas, and the long rhythm of the roundup. He is not the story's center, but he is part of the human weather that Smoky must learn to read, another set of hands and habits in a world that runs on them. His presence grounds the book in the ordinary competence of ranch life, the kind of men who make a horse's education possible.
