The chapter introduces his mother, the old buckskin horse who becomes his playful guardian, and Smoky's early experiences with other colts, calves, and wildlife like coyotes. It establishes his inheritance of mustang instincts and his first encounters with the world.
Chapter 3
II: Smoky Meets the Human
Smoky grows from a colt into a yearling, experiencing the seasons, the birth of a new brother, and his first encounters with humans. After being driven into a corral, he witnesses a horse being ridden and bucking, leaving a deep impression of fear and curiosity about the two-legged creatures.
Chapter 4
Where the Trails Fork
Smoky matures from a mischievous colt into a serious gelding through a series of fights and alliances. After being separated from his mother and the herd, he forms a partnership with the big buckskin. Together they fight off a chestnut stud, eventually winning a small band of mares and colts. Smoky learns the ways of the range, loses his orneriness, and finds a new purpose as a steady horse.
Chapter 5
IV: The End of a Rope
Smoky is captured and penned in a corral, separated from his herd and the old buckskin. A cowboy ropes him, ties his feet, and fits him with a hackamore. After a fierce struggle, Smoky is tied to a log in a creek bottom, beginning his education in submission to human control.
