As a supporting figure in Sinister Street, Sylvia Scarlett is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Sylvia challenges Michael's influence over Lily and ultimately takes Lily away.
Sylvia moves through Michael's life as a presence he cannot quite fold into the ordinary social round of his mother's house and Stella's engagement talk. Her unconventionality makes her a natural ally for a young man carrying secrets he will not recite on demand. She matters as one of the figures who pulls Michael toward a wider, less respectable experience of the world.
