Five years after their first meeting, Lily reappears to Michael with her contours unblunted by time, and the quest for her becomes a deliberate withdrawal from his familiar world. His cab ride toward Neptune Crescent turns Kentish Town and the Hampstead Road into an underworld of yellow omnibuses, chalked skeletons, and Jack the Ripper memories. She is the pull toward everything his upbringing warned against—and the test of whether his romantic idealism can survive contact with real London.
