First appearance: The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle
As a supporting figure in Short Fiction, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
The hedgehog washerwoman who launders clothes for the animals and birds.
Mrs. Tiggy-winkle lives behind a door in the hill at Cat Bells, where she washes and irons the small brown coats, moleskin waistcoats, and shrunk blue jackets of half the countryside. Her brown, soap-wrinkled hands and her sideways tea with Lucie make her at once homely and faintly uncanny. When she runs up the hill and shrinks into a prickled hedgehog, the tale leaves the reader to decide what was dream and what was washing.
