Chapter 1
The Great God Pan
Dr. Raymond performs a surgical experiment on Mary, a young woman, to allow her to see the god Pan, resulting in her mental and physical ruin. Years later, a series of mysterious suicides and strange events in London are linked to a woman named Helen Vaughan, who is revealed to be the offspring of Mary's unnatural union with Pan. The story follows Mr. Villiers and Mr. Clarke as they uncover the horrifying truth behind the occult conspiracy.
Chapter 2
The Experiment
Dr. Raymond conducts a neurosurgical experiment on Mary, a young woman he rescued from the streets, aiming to open her perception to the spirit world. Clarke, a reluctant witness, observes as Mary briefly sees something transcendent before collapsing into a state of hopeless idiocy. Raymond remains unrepentant, believing Mary has glimpsed the Great God Pan.
Chapter 3
II: Mr. Clarke's Memoirs
Mr. Clarke, a man of cautious yet curious nature, revisits his memoirs compiled to prove the existence of the Devil. He reads a disturbing account from his friend Dr. Phillips about a girl named Helen V. and her involvement in two terrifying incidents: a young boy named Trevor M. is traumatized after seeing Helen with a 'strange naked man' in the woods, and later reacts violently to a Roman stone head of a faun; years later, Helen's close friendship with Rachel M. leads to Rachel's mysterious distress and eventual disappearance. Clarke, horrified, recalls interrupting Phillips's story and now struggles with the implications of such evil incarnate in human form.
Chapter 4
III: The City of Resurrections
Villiers encounters his old college friend Charles Herbert, now a degraded beggar, in the streets of London. Herbert recounts his marriage to a mysterious and beautiful woman, and his subsequent ruin. Later, Villiers learns from Austin about the Paul Street case, where a man was found dead outside Herbert's house, apparently from sheer terror. The chapter deepens the mystery surrounding Herbert and his wife, hinting at dark and supernatural forces.
Chapter 5
IV: The Discovery in Paul Street
Months after Villiers's encounter with Herbert, he visits Clarke to recount the strange tale of Herbert's marriage to a woman named Helen Vaughan, who corrupted him body and soul. Villiers also describes the mysterious death of a man named Mr. Blank in Herbert's former house on Paul Street, which he investigated. He shows Clarke a sketch of Helen Vaughan found among Herbert's papers. Clarke, recognizing the face as resembling Mary from Dr. Raymond's experiment, is deeply shaken and realizes the connection between the woman in the sketch and the earlier events he documented in his Memoirs.
