Concepts
Ideas that structure Short Fiction by Ring Lardner — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Masculinity and Sports
The book repeatedly centers on baseball players, their locker-room banter, and the pressures of performance, using sports as a lens to explore male identity, competition, and camaraderie.
Class and Aspiration
Characters across stories grapple with money, social climbing, and the desire for upward mobility, often revealing the gap between their ambitions and their actual circumstances.
Marriage and Gender Roles
Marriage is portrayed as a battleground of expectations, misunderstandings, and power struggles, with wives and husbands frequently at odds over money, social life, and personal freedom.
Disillusionment and Failure
Many protagonists face crushing disappointments—in love, career, or family—and the stories highlight the gap between romantic ideals and harsh realities, often with a tone of bitter irony.
Celebrity and Artistic Integrity
The book critiques the entertainment industry, where stars are manufactured, stories are bought and sold without reading, and artistic merit is routinely sacrificed for commercial gain.
Family and Generational Conflict
Parent-child relationships are strained by differing values, especially around materialism and independence, as seen in the Christmas story where children reject their parents' traditions and gifts.
Alcohol and Escapism
Drinking is a recurring motif, used both as a social lubricant and as a means of escaping emotional pain, with characters often turning to alcohol to cope with disappointment or boredom.
Satire of Media and Business
The book lampoons the absurdities of journalism, publishing, and corporate life, showing how greed, incompetence, and vanity drive decision-making in these worlds.
