Concepts
Ideas that structure Short Fiction by Tanizaki Jun’ichirō — linked to characters, chapters, and questions.
Beauty and Pain
The book explores the intimate connection between aesthetic beauty and physical or emotional suffering, as seen in the tattooer Seikichi who derives pleasure from his clients' pain and in the characters' sacrifices for love or art.
Obsession and Desire
Characters are driven by consuming desires—Seikichi's years-long quest for the perfect female subject to tattoo, and Shinsuké's forbidden love for Tsuya—leading to moral conflict and destructive outcomes.
Social Class and Servitude
The stories highlight rigid class hierarchies, as Shinsuké laments his menial position and the impossibility of marrying his master's daughter, and the tattooer's clients range from merchants to samurai, reflecting social stratification.
Transformation and Identity
Characters undergo profound changes, such as the girl in 'Tattooing' who discovers her inner nature through art, and Kakutaro in 'The White Fox' who is enchanted and transformed by a supernatural fox, blurring human and animal identities.
Supernatural and Folklore
The play 'The White Fox' draws on Japanese folklore, featuring fox enchantment, spirits, and magical transformations, while the tattooer's art is portrayed as a mystical transfer of soul into flesh.
Art and Artistry
The role of the artist is central, with Seikichi embodying the tortured creator who views human skin as canvas, and the ukiyo-e tradition informing his work, raising questions about the morality and power of artistic creation.
Love and Sacrifice
Romantic love is portrayed as a force that compels sacrifice, as seen in Tsuya's willingness to elope and risk everything for Shinsuké, and Osayo's desperate search for Kakutaro despite warnings of supernatural danger.
Tradition vs. Modernity
The stories are set in a nostalgic Edo period, contrasting with emerging modern influences, such as the mention of a Dutch doctor's chloroform and the tension between old customs and changing social norms.
