As a supporting figure in Short Fiction, Miss Pillenger is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Miss Pillenger is Mr. Meggs's secretary and typist, a self-described business woman whose dignity is always drawn back like a clenched fist against any male who oversteps. Where her predecessors fled the tedium of Mr. Meggs's village and his interminable butterfly lectures, she has stayed six years for five pounds a week, unmoved by romance or scenery. Her icy composure makes her a comic counterweight to whatever schemes or suitors the story throws at her employer.
