First appearance: when papa swore in hindustani
As a major figure in Short Fiction, Crowned Heads Katie is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
Katie is the protagonist, a shy bookshop owner surprised by Ted Brady's attention and later distressed by her grandfather's opposition to their engagement.
Katie, called Kitty by some and Crowned Heads Katie by the papers, walks out on Andy when he shoves his jaw out instead of asking, and takes London by storm in The Rose Girl. Her success is real, her pictures are everywhere, and her breezy return to MacFarland's as a taxicab celebrity shows a woman who has outgrown the man who let her go. Her rise gives the story its sharpest measure of what Andy has thrown away.
