First appearance: when papa swore in hindustani
As a supporting figure in Short Fiction, Clifford Gandle is not background color—the story leans on what they do once the chapter opens.
A pompous Member of Parliament whom Lady Wickham favors.
Gandle is everything a mother could want — steady, respectable, a former President of the Union — which is precisely why Bobbie greets the prospect of marrying him with gloom. He pursues her patiently through the grounds of Skeldings Hall, baffled but not defeated, while Algy Crufts recoils at the very name. His oppressive suitability creates the pressure that drives Bobbie's scheming, and his dogged pursuit keeps the romantic plot simmering through the middle of the book.
